For over 60 years, The National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) has been dedicated to raising the bar of professionalism for those practicing in the criminal justice field. At the heart of this objective are collaborative programs designed to help enable sheriffs, their deputies, chiefs of police, and others in the field to perform their jobs to the best of their ability and to most effectively serve the people in their jurisdictions.

As a result of the events that took place on September 11, 2001, these collaborations have become even more important and serve as a vital component in securing our homeland. National Sheriffs' Association values the alliances it has formed with the organizations listed below. The National Sheriffs' Association uses the resources below to help keep America safe.

Ready.gov:
Launched in February 2003, Ready is a National public service campaign designed to educate and empower the American people to prepare for, respond to and mitigate emergencies, including natural and man-made disasters. The goal of the campaign is to promote preparedness through public involvement.

Programs under Ready.gov include:

Federal Emergency Management Agency:
For 38 years, FEMA's mission remains: to lead America to prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from disasters with a vision of "A Nation Prepared."

On April 1, 1979, President Jimmy Carter signed the executive order that created the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  From day one, FEMA has remained committed to protecting and serving the American people. That commitment to the people we serve and the belief in our survivor centric mission will never change.

Department of Homeland Security:
The Department of Homeland Security has a vital mission: to secure the nation from the many threats we face. This requires the dedication of more than 240,000 employees in jobs that range from aviation and border security to emergency response, from cybersecurity analyst to chemical facility inspector. Our duties are wide-ranging, and our goal is clear – keeping America safe.

Office of Justice Programs:
The OJP provides federal leadership in developing the nation's capacity to prevent and control crime, administer justice, and assist crime victims. OJP is headed by an Assistant Attorney General and comprises five component bureaus and two offices:

Community Oriented Policing Services:
This Office was created as a result of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. As a component of the Justice Department, the mission of theOffice is to advance community policing in jurisdictions of all sizes across the country.

National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC):

The National Crime Prevention Council’s mission is to be the nation’s leader in helping people keep themselves, their families, and their communities safe from crime. To achieve this, NCPC produces tools that communities can use to learn crime prevention strategies, engage community members, and coordinate with local agencies, including

  • Publications and teaching materials on a variety of topics
  • Programs that can be implemented in communities and schools
  • Local, regional, and national trainings
  • Public service announcements broadcast nationwide starring McGruff the Crime Dog
  • Support for a national coalition of crime prevention practitioners

Nation Association of Town Watches(NATW):
National Association of Town Watch was founded to provide community watch groups the necessary resources and assets to stay informed, interested, involved, and motivated within the community. It's main program/project is National Night Out.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.
